Your period shouldn’t keep you housebound because of fears of bleeding everywhere. In this episode I walk you through the underlying causes of heavy menstrual bleeding, and how the causes shift as a woman ages from adolescence to perimenopause. I talk about my frustration in the literature about heavy bleeding (it actually says we aren’t to believe women what she says about her blood flow) and how women can begin to advocate for the tests that would better understand their situation. Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the major causes for young women to avoid exercise and can put women at risk of iron deficiency throughout their lifetime. If you’ve ever wondered if your amount of blood loss is “normal” have a listen. The podcast and I are up for two Paragon awards (podcast of the year and clinician of the year) and the voting takes place until October 9th.
